YMCA Lakeside is a very busy and highly respected Outdoor Adventure and Education residential centre. These are important and responsible positions, as our clients expect great quality outdoor education and adventure programmes. Our clients include schools, colleges, youth-groups, corporate and family, which gives you a great opportunity to learn and develop, broaden your instructional skills and deepen your understanding of "Learning Outside the Classroom". Many staff have the opportunity to extend contracts for one or two months into the autumn. This year 16 staff worked through October and some staff are working until the end of November.
Based in the southern Lake District on the edge of Windermere with ½ mile of shoreline we are ideally placed for water-sports. Climbing is served by our three climbing crags which together with many of our other activities are based in the 450 acres of woodland surrounding us. For bigger adventures, and in your own time too, there are the Mountains, Crags, Caves, Rivers and Lakes all around us.
YMCA Lakeside is looking to recruit a freelance Paddle Sport Specialist initially for the 2017 season, with further seasons possible. This is an excellent career development opportunity for a skilled and committed paddler. Paddle sports are a key part of Lakeside’s outdoor activities and are used for a wide range of learning outside the classroom outcomes including personal and social development.
The role is freelance (self-employed) and consists of 40 to 50 days spread out between March and October .There is a greater proportion of days during staff training which is in March/April and in May /June to assess staff. The other days spread out to the end of October. The exact days are negotiable. The successful candidate will join our activity health and safety team in training, assessing and monitoring the paddlesport provision.
We recruit 35 seasonal instructors plus freelancers for peak periods. Two thirds of these instructors will be new starters each year. The role is therefore about helping ensure that YMCA Lakeside instructors are competent to deliver high quality, introductory, paddle sport sessions and lake based journeys in a variety of crafts including kayaks, canoes, group canoes (outrigger) improvised rafting, and 1.5m inflatables. In addition, it is about helping ensure that an appropriate balance between safety and risk is applied to the paddle sports delivery through staff training and the continuous review of Risk Assessment and Standard Operating Procedure.
The candidate will therefore need to be a British Canoeing level 5/UKCC level 3 with a 5* in single and double bladed disciplines. It is essential that the candidate can demonstrate experience of training and assessing paddle sports instructors in a variety of locations including outdoor education centres. It is desirable that the candidate is involved in delivery of the BC canoeing coach education program in particular the 4*star leadership courses.

We are looking for an excellent sales/bookings/marketing administrator to help our clients through the sales and bookings process with all the relevent and timely information that is essential to bring a group of children or young people to us for our fantastic Outdoor Education and Learning residentials. We also want the right people to assist us in marketing driving up bookings enquiries and bringing more young people to benefit from the Lakeside experience. To date we have provided a Lakeside learning experience to well over a million young people
We will pay you £8.05 per hour (Full time as a salary £15,697.50 for a 37.5 hour week) and give you the option of subsidised on-site meals.
We are looking for committed, enthusiastic individuals to join our dedicated Housekeeping team. This is no ordinary House Keeping position, with a variety of client needs and facilities to care for, we are looking for individuals who enjoy getting stuck in, can pay attention to detail and have a commitment to provide our clients with facilities to the highest of standards and excellent customer service. Hours are negotiable, up to a maximum of 35 hours a week and term time only considered. £11,921pa pro rata, £7.20 per hour.
This is designed for those of you who do not have sufficient qualifications and or experience yet. We offer you the chance to join our team and learn on the job. If you gain the NGBs and demonstrate the skills during the season we will upgrade you to an Instructor contract. Extended volunteering opportunities into the autumn are usually available. We find that volunteers who are serious about a career in the outdoors and ready to make the best of all the opportunities available get the most from this programme. As well as part uniform, full training and induction, meals and accommodation we give you £50 a week towards your expenses.
