A great way to make new friends
It’s autumn: the leaves are changing colour turning the Lake District into a rich vista of scarlet, auburn and crimson, Lake Windermere is still pleasantly warm from the summer months, and the school term is now well underway. At Lakeside, it’s also the time of year when we welcome all the newbies.
Schools and colleges from around the country bring their new Year 7, and Year 12 students to Lakeside for a week of outdoor fun and adventure.
It’s a great opportunity for all students, whether it’s their first year at high school or their first year of A levels, to break the ice and make new friends. Tony Ball, Programme Operations Manager, explains:
“Moving up to high school or moving into higher education is exciting but it can also be a daunting prospect for some young people. Our school and college adventure programmes are designed to ease this transition.”
Preparing for life
Our outdoor activities encourage teamwork, with young people working together and relying on one another to complete the challenge or task. There’s something for everyone, from land-based trust activities to kayaking, raft building and high ropes.
“Our school adventure holidays can be a short-cut to preparing young people for a new chapter in their lives. They make new friends, learn valuable life skills such as teamwork, self-reliance and responsibility, and often surprise themselves by taking on challenges they didn’t think possible. It’s amazing to see how much some young people change in just a week,” adds Tony.
Don’t take our word for it
Here’s what teachers and students think about our school adventure holidays.
“We’ve been visiting Lakeside for over ten years now for our annual Year 7 residential. It is a wonderful venue in a fantastic setting and has excellent facilities for both staff and young people. We have used other centres but we believe Lakeside is the best venue. Our children have always had a brilliant time because of the venue, the staff and of course the activities.”
D Stenhouse, Teacher, Wirral
“I had a fantastic experience at Lakeside, mainly because of the jam-packed activity schedule. My friends and I were never bored because we were always out doing something new. Each activity was exciting and different and every one of our instructors was really fun One night we all sat round a fire in the woods and toasted marshmallows, which was great. I wish the trip lasted longer, no one wanted to leave.”
