Plans for the future start with high-tech school centre
In late autumn 2017, work will hopefully begin on our new South Camp outdoor education centre. The new eco-friendly building, with stunning views over Lake Windermere is designed especially for school groups and marks the first stage of our longer-term plans for Lakeside.
Fundraising is ongoing, but it’s expected that the new Centre will open at the end of the summer term 2019. It’s designed to cater for 192 individuals within 8 separate wings, allowing us to offer separate male and female sleeping quarters and safely accommodate more than one school at a time. Schools will also benefit from improved safeguarding, en-suite bedrooms, wet and dry entrances and multi-use break out areas.
As Tony Ball, Programme Operations Manager explains, this is just the start of the improvements planned for Lakeside:
“We’re also working towards a 10-year plan that will see our North Camp completely re-developed for our business and family visitors. In the meantime, we’ll be refurbishing and upgrading our existing North Camp facilities and bedrooms.”
As you’d expect, conservation and the environment is at the heart of any development at Lakeside. The new South Camp centre has high standards of energy conservation. Architecturally, the building is designed to ‘disappear’ into the landscape, minimising the visual impact on Lake Windermere.
Tented camping, which currently takes place at South Camp will continue at Lakeside. When work begins on the new centre, we’ll relocate the camping facilities within our site.
