Designed for schools – work to start on futuristic centre in 2018
In March 2018 we intend to start work on our new South Camp outdoor education centre. The new eco-friendly building, with stunning views over Lake Windermere, has been designed with schools in mind and is expected to take 12 months to complete.
With capacity for 192 individuals, improved safeguarding, wet and dry entrances and multi-use break out areas are just some of the benefits schools will enjoy when the centre opens. Tony Ball, Programme Operations Manager explains:
“We’ve seen a real surge in enquiries from schools for our outdoor educational holidays over the past 12 months or so, which is fantastic. It also means that our new education centre is more important than ever for YMCA Lakeside to continue providing high quality outdoor education for the next generation of school children.”
More about the new South Centre
The new South Camp centre not only looks amazing but it’s also designed around the practical needs of school groups. Plans include 8 wings, comprising:
- En-suite rooms sleeping 2, 4 or 6 people.
- High-tech security access.
- Multi-use breakout/teaching rooms, high-tech facilities for presentations.
- Refreshment making facilities in breakout areas – ideal for evening hot chocolate!
- Teacher/leader lounge with great views and refreshment making facilities – perfect for quiet moments to yourself.
- Dry entrance for arrival.
- Wet entrance for after activities.
- Fully catered, communal restaurant area*.
While young people are encouraged to enjoy a visit to Lakeside without technology, it’s anticipated that the new centre will have full Wi-Fi connectivity.
As you’d expect from Lakeside, our new centre has been designed with the environment in mind and will have high standards of energy conservation. Architecturally, the building is designed to ‘disappear’ into the landscape, minimising the visual impact on Lake Windermere.
For those groups who enjoy tented camping, which has always taken place at South Camp, don’t worry. Our intention is that camping will continue at Lakeside.
When the Centre is fully operational, camping group leaders will also have full use of the Teacher/Leader Lounge area, and dedicated showers and toilets.
*Please inform our team of any special dietary requirements at the time of booking.
